SUMMARY:agit2020

SUMMARY:GI_Forum2020
DESCRIPTION:  \nGI_Forum provides a platform for dialogue among geospatial minds\, informing the GeoInformation Society\, contributing to a more just\, ethical and sustainable society. \nGeoInformatics is established today as effective methodology\, based on georeferenced technologies and has become the standard feature in many application domains. How did this dynamic development towards a key discipline of digitalization happen\, not only in the economic sector but in all spheres of our daily lives? \nCoordinates serve as key connection among all location-based data and information. Integration by means of ‘spatial joins’ results in new information\, thus\, providing additional knowledge as basis of decision-making processes for science\, economy and our entire society.

SUMMARY:GEOBIA 2020
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis special GEOBIA track will be a 1.5 days conference within the multi-faceted GI_Week\, taking place from July 7 – 10\, 2020. As continuation of seven successful GEOBIA conferences since its launch in 2006\, this special event will return “home” – to the place where it all began. \nThe primary goal of Earth observation (EO) is to map\, analyse\, and monitor the status and dynamics of complex Earth system phenomena. Through the spatial lens and ‘imaging’ reality\, we shall obtain quantifiable indicators and other objective information for improved decision-making and status reporting. Within EO applications\, object-based image analysis (OBIA) has become a key methodological enabler to address spatial\, topological\, and hierarchical properties of image objects  with an underlying conceptual model close to the way how we perceive (and mentally organise) reality. \nRecent advances in big EO data management and analytics\, including data cube solutions\, massive data storage and access infrastructure\, has pushed for higher grounds in operational image processing and analysis-ready data; but often re-emphasizing per-pixel analysis. Machine learning\, in particular deep learning using CNNs\, can also employ scale and neighbourhood\, while the performance largely depends on quality and amount of samples.  Hybrid approaches may foster the combined use of knowledge-based and (physical) model-based approaches and machine learning. On finer levels of elementary image objects\, where sufficient high-quality samples are abundant\, ML-strategies may outperform the tedious process of explicit object descriptors and segmentation tuning; complementary\, when generating composite objects on higher organisational levels\, where samples are sparse and clear models and definitions exist\, a knowledge-based direct modelling of object properties and relationships may be more cost- and time-efficient. \nTopics include\, but are not limited\, to: \n\nSpatio-temporal concepts in image understanding\nMulti-scale image analysis\nObject-specific quality indicators\nHybrid approaches (combining machine learning and machine teaching)\nState of play of OBIA methods and tools in open source and commercial software environments\nBest practice OBIA in operational solutions (e.g. Copernicus info services\, SDG indicators\, etc.)\nBig EO data – back to pixels?

SUMMARY:AGILE Conference 2020 (cancelled)
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Association of Geographic Information Laboratories in Europe (AGILE) has held annual conferences focused on Geographical Information Science for more than two decades. \nThe 23rd AGILE conference will be held in Chania\, Crete\, Greece on 16-19 June\, 2020. The theme of the conference is Geospatial Technologies: seeding the future. \nThe main topics for the 2020 conference include\, among others: Space informatics\, Big Spatial Data\, Analysis and Visualization\, Interoperability with Aerial and Satellite Platforms\, Volunteered Geographic Information and Community Observatories\, Socio-Economic Impact Assessment of GI\, deep learning applications\, disruptive GI technologies\, as well as GIScience and Technology Education and Training. Contributors are encouraged to propose new themes\, both for presentations and for workshops. \nAGILE seeks to ensure that new perspectives on teaching and research in geographic information science are fully represented at the conference to help shape the future European research agenda in this field. This is also aligned with our conference theme\, Geospatial Technologies: seeding the future\, that emphasizes an interest in the development of novel solutions\, modern data retrieval platforms and social integration according to the challenges that arise in our changing planet. In addition\, we need to maximise the potential and synergies of modern data retrieval platforms such as unmanned remotely operating systems and operational satellite constellation such as Copernicus Sentinels for maximizing the investments made by both geospatial and Earth observation communities.
